Automatic voter registration constitutional; implement automatic application, approval and admission into electoral roll

The EC chief acknowledged his organisation's failure in raising public awareness on the importance of voting despite numerous campaigns.[1] Rather than blaming the people, he should act to redress the matter.

He must also be truthful to himself and the Malaysian people, and not be selective on the reason behind those failures. One of the key contributory factors for the people's reluctance to register as voters, is their lack of confidence towards the EC. It cannot be denied that the EC has both the ruling regime and itself to blame on this.

The EC does not need to make voter registration compulsory, but to automatically admit all qualified citizens into the electoral roll. This can happen well within constitutionality by implementing an automatic application, approval and admission into the electoral roll for qualified citizens. It is purely a matter of technocratic and political will by the EC and the ruling regime. The oft quoted constitutional issue does not arise.

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 OKT: Menurunkan had umur layak mengundi dari 21 ke 18 tahun adalah cara terbaik bagi mengatasi masalah yang dihadapi Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR), kata Pengarah Biro Hal Ehwal Antarabangsa Sosialis Muda DAP (DAPSY), Howard Lee.

Ini disuarakan beliau sebagai menjawab rungutan agensi terbabit terhadap kesedaran yang rendah dalam kalangan orang ramai, khususnya anak muda tentang kepentingan untuk mendaftar sebagai pemilih.

“Sebagai meraikan semangat demokrasi, dan bagi mengatasi masalah kurang minat anak muda, had umur mengundi perlu diturunkan ke 18 tahun,” katanya yang juga Adun Pasir Pinji dalam kenyataan, hari ini.

“Jika seseorang berumur 18 tahun boleh memilih untuk berkhidmat sebagai tentera demi tanah air, sepatutnya tidak adalah masalah bagi mereka untuk mengundi siapa yang mereka mahu untuk memerintah negara.”

Pengerusi SPR, Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah seperti dilaporkan media semalam berkata meskipun pelbagai pendekatan dan kempen untuk meningkatkan jumlah pemilih berdaftar telah dilakukan di seluruh negara, tahap kesedaran orang ramai terhadap perkara itu masih rendah.
